Hotmail deleted my email account, the first email account I ever had, the one that took me from middle school to college. Emails from my late grandparents, emails my cousins and I wrote back and forth to each other when we were angsty teenagers. A lot of stuff I would have liked to still have. RIP, old emails.

I’m trying to convince myself that this is for the best. Sometimes I think it’s nice to not have hard records of things because it allows you to remember them in the most romantic light. This is one of the two major reasons I destroy my journals 2 years after I finish them. I have moments I sometimes wish I’d photographed but I tell myself it’s better to remember those times as perfect instead of having photo documentation to convince me otherwise.

Still, my inclination is that this is not for the best, and Microsoft is an uncaring and terrible company for doing this without adequate warning. The account had been active within the last 8 months at the longest. I could understand, I guess, if an account had not been accessed in two years AND you had no alternate contact information for the person. If I want, for a limited time they’ll reactivate my account (without any of the content). go to hell!

Everyone knows gmail is the best web-based email service around, and hotmail hasn’t even been one of the best since the early 90s. So there. Go hang out with Quizno’s, you’re on my list.
