I recently had my bags searched at an airport and was relieved of about $50 worth of makeup. I could have checked the bag but since I was flying standby, I didn’t think it was worth the potential of getting separated from my bag.

You are no longer supposed to fly carrying gels, because you might be trying to make a bomb with it. Fair enough, except it couldn’t be more obvious how much no one cares. Inconvenience us so we’ll never forget how secure you made things, but of course, don’t inconvenience us enough that it inconveniences you.

If they were hardcore about it, that would have been fine, but the inconsistency just pissed me off. For example, gel deodorants are on the no-no list. Fortunately for me, although my deodorant is liquid and squeezes through holes in the top of the dispenser, it then turns to powder. The inspector got suspicious when he saw the goop oozing out of the applicator holes, but fortunately, he knew I wasn’t trying to pull any fast ones there after noting that the label said “POWDER” on it. Are you serious?

My lip gloss and concealer, though— toast. If that quantity of gel would allow me to do anything dangerous, I could have just as easily hidden as much in my belly button, ear canal, a water bra, or hell, a deodorant container labeled “POWDER”.

I was able to get my favorite lip balm through security by using the trick everyone already knows. Put it in your pocket and carry it on your body when you walk through the metal detector.

I, for one, feel safer.

  1. The rules for liquids are widely known. I agree with you that the in consistency is stupid. But, why did you even try to get the liquid makeup items through? That was asking for trouble.
