First things first: I have a new cousin. Her name is Jenna Isabel and she’s the cutest baby in the world. I haven’t actually seen a picture of her yet, but I know this to be true because her parents are damned attractive people, and my family is really good at making adorable babies.

Now to the older news: I finally got a call from the fine people at Stone Brothers to say that my long-awaited tree had finally moseyed into town. I brought it home without delay, of course. It looked a little tall to me, but I figured bundling it up might have elongated the appearance a bit.

Now, when I started called this plant a “tree”, it was only mine in theory and the term was a euphemism. I just wanted a houseplant a little taller than the ficus Sophie and Picasso like to hang out in so much. Maybe even as tall as me, but to anyone who has ever worked in cubicle land, that’s not such a ridiculous request. But this is a tree. It towers over me—I’m guessing eight feet. You can grab it by the trunk sideways, like a log, and not worry about the roots caving to the 50lb planter hanging off of it. This tree has such a presence that I feel like I should name it, though I try not to be a person others think of as “extreme” and I think I might be flirting with full-on insane behavior.

For those of you in Durham, I would highly recommend Stone Brothers. I was really impressed by their professionalism and expertise…there really aren’t enough places like that anymore.

I promised photo documentation of this event, so here you go: the tree, me standing in front of the tree, S&P getting over their tree fear (they’re birds, what the hell, right?) once I hung a swing in it, and S&P finally making themselves at home:

And just for the heck of it, some other pictures from the week…the new WoW station, a portrait of my self-pity, David being productive, and the happiest part of my apartment.

That’s all for now; more updates soon(ish)!

  1. You are worried about people thinking you are insane for naming your tree? I believe it was the 6th grade science fair that your project was “the effects of plant growth by talking to them”.
